Budget Haul: $20 at a Yard-Sale

This past weekend, I was able to find some amazing treasures. I had a lot of fun going to yard sales with my friends Kara and Keely. I learned quickly that the correct term in North Dakota is rummage sale. 🙂 I also found a couple of finds at the Free Digger Sale at the Seeds of Hope thrift shop.

And for twenty bucks, I got all of this! Here is the break down for the clothing:

  • Long black tunic: $0.75, yard sale’d (Fishbowl)
  • Black shrug – $3,  yard sale’d (Limited)
  • Gray and black waffle shirt -$0.50, yard sale’d (New Boundaries)
  • Peach button-down shirt $0.75, yard sale’d (Faded Glory)
  • Mint button down shirt:$0.75, yard sale’d (J. Crew )
  • Blue striped button-down shirt: $0.75, yard sale’d (Ralph Lauren)
  • Ivory button down shirt – $1.50, yard sale’d (Ruff Hewn )
  • Peach, sparrow motif sweater –  $1.50, yard sale’d (unknown, tag ripped out)
  • Mint skinny jeans -$2, yard sale’d (YMI)
  • Denim skinny jeans – $1, yard sale’d (Blue Spice)
  • Denim boot cut jeans -$0.25, yard sale’d (Arizona)
  • Faux leather leggings -$3, yard sale’d (Teenage Runway)
  • Velvet scarf hanger -$1, yard sale’d
  • Green peace sign scarf -$0.50, yard sale’d
  • Brown Cinch Belt -free , yard sale’d

(No pictures of outfits today. I’ll feature them in a future post.)

As you can tell, I was definitely in a button-down shirt kind of mood. Hints of fall are already here in Bismarck, and I feel the need to wear long button-downs, sweaters and tunics with my skinny jeans. Pair them with a cup of hot cocoa, and life is perfect. 🙂

Another funny thing….I don’t know how I do it, but every time I come home with clothing from thrift shops, flea markets and rummage sales, I manage to choose them in a matching color scheme. I don’t even choose the colors consciously. It just… happens. I guess my brain likes color coordination. 🙂

Also, I found some other awesome treasures. Here the breakdown:

  • 180 page Notebook, free, yard sale’d
  • Fortune cookie greeting card, free, yard sale’d
  • Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Gailbraith, a.k.a. J.K. Rowling: $2, yard sale’d —One of my favorite books. It’s dark and a little gritty, but that’s how I like my mystery novels!!
  • 7 Fragrance samples  -$1, yard-saled (Chloe, Romance de Provence by Catherine Malandrino, Clean Cool Cotton, Tocca Florence, Girl by Pherrell Williams,  Vera Bradley Apple Berry Champagne, and Mystic Pearl by Raw Spirit)
  • 2 decorative glass bowls -free, thrifted, Seeds of Hope
  • Red photo gift box -free, yard sale’d

Twenty dollars can go a lot farther than you think! 🙂

3 Things I’m Loving Right Now

GE
GE

I  figured that today, I’d show you some of my new blessings, and tell you why I like them.

The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown, Ph.D. –I’ve read several self-help books, and this is by far one of the best I have picked up. This book pretty much pinpoints every issue I have with stress and self-esteem, teaches to new paradigms to adapt, and gives actual ways to apply them. For me, this is huge. So often, books are filled with uplifting principles and stories, but don’t actual give a way to incorporate them into my daily life. Or, there will be a super complicated plan that I don’t have the time or the patience for. But this gives you small, quick exercises to try out, which is awesome! It covers topics from perfectionism and letting go of what others think, to relaxation and creativity. This book is worth its weight in gold. 🙂

Cliff Mojo Trail Mix Bars –I love protein bars. They’re quick and easy to eat on the go. Many times, though, the bar will have a weird consistency or taste chalky, or have way too much sugar (and still manage to taste bad!) But I love the Cliff Mojo bars. They taste pretty much like a granola bar, but have the protein requirements that I desire. Plus, they are low glycemic, and 70% organic! What’s not to love?

Anti-Anxiety Synergy Blend by Plant Therapy -I love essential oils. I have since high school, in fact, when I stumbled across a delightful metaphysical store in Richmond, Virginia. They are soothing, all natural, and make my house smell great. But, one of my biggest problems is finding them. Either I feel like I have to deal with a pushy MLM consultant, or I have a very limited selection at the grocery store. So, I decided to branch out, and order one from Amazon! Plant Therapy is a company that sells essential oils on Amazon, and has really high reviews. I was really excited when I stumbled across this anti-anxiety oil blend, as I’ve really been struggling with managing my stress levels. This blend has lavender, marjoram, ylang ylang, sandalwood, vanilla, and Roman chamomile. It’s a roll-on blend, so it’s diluted in coconut oil. I love this stuff! It smells so good, and I think it’s helping me to feel a little less stressed. At the very least, it makes my room smell soothing.

I hope your day goes amazing!

(Disclaimer: I do have the 3 things that I love attached to my Amazon affiliate links. If you want to try the items out, your purchase will help finance my blog!)

NaNoWriMo Survival Kit

nano
I decided to do a post compiling a NaNoWriMo Survival Kit. Yay! Although this is a primarily a beauty, and fashion blog, I think this post still fits. I am a 2013 NaNoWriMo participant, and my book does has beauty and fashion themes. Plus, there’s lip balm and pajamas in the kit.
So, here’s what’s in my NaNoWriMo Survival Kit:
* Lip Balm -When I spend hours writing, one of the most annoying things for me to experience are chapped lips. Keeping a little lip balm on hand helps keep my lips happy, my mind from distraction, and my fingers typing.
* Protein Bars -While devotion to writing is good, starving yourself isn’t. Many NaNo writers will tell you to keep snacks and even candy on hand. While that’s perfectly fine, I really don’t want to gain lots of weight just before the holidays. So, for me, the perfect solution is a protein bar. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s even healthy. 🙂
* A Timer -If you like to do word sprints like me, a timer is a great tool. There are lots of inexpensive kitchen timers that you can busy. You can also your alarm, microwave, or even your computer.
* Comfy pajamas -For me, being comfortable is very important when writing. And pajamas meet this requirement perfectly! I’d love to get a pair of superman pajamas like these someday. 🙂
* Yummy Hot Drink -For me, there’s nothing that helps me feel like I’m in a cafe, like drinking something nice and warm (or for those who have tougher taste buds than me, something nice and hot). My personal favorites are chamomile tea and hot cocoa.
* Music -Some writers like silence, and some writers like noise. And then, some writers like music. I’m definitely in the music category. Whether it’s on your iPod, MP3 player, radio or computer, music can be a great aid in helps the words to keep coming.
* Notebook and Colored Pencils -Sometimes, when I have a plot tangle or am just plain stumped, pulling out a notebook can help me fix my writer’s block. Colored pencils are especially helpful, and I think this helps you access the right side of your brain better. Even if it doesn’t, it sure makes things more fun!
* Sugar-Free Gum -My sweet tooth loves to try and tear me away from the computer, and into the kitchen. Some sugar-free gum goes a long way in helping me to keep writing. That, and I don’t ingest any unneeded sugar! I love the Extra Dessert Delight flavors. They include apple pie, strawberry shortcake, key lime pie, and more! My current favorite is Raspberry Cupcake.
And, for my fellow writers, here’s a few websites that might help out:
* Coffitivity -This website simulates the sound of a cafe, great for writers on a budget.
* The Nano Jar -The blog article has a great tip for writing prompts during your NaNoWriMo journey.
* Writing Rewards -Rewards can go a long way in helping you to keep writing.

J.K. Rowling and Body Image

This image was created by Arthlete on Tumblr. You can click on the picture to check out her blog.

I found this quote/picture on Pinterest, and it really touched me. It was said by J.K. Rowling, one of my favorite authors. It reminded me that character development is so much more important that what size we are. While it is important to take care of our bodies, and to treat them with respect, I don’t think that self-loathing due to weight answers that call. And really, what’s more stylish than self-confidence?

If there is one thing that I can leave with my readers, is that you are beautiful just the way you are. Fashion and cosmetics should broadcast your beauty, not cover up supposed flaws. It doesn’t matter what your weight is, the color of your skin, hair or eyes, your height, or anything else. Beauty exists in so many various and unique forms within nature -and it is the same way with humanity. Please, understand that you are amazing and beautiful because of your uniqueness-not in spite of it.

(And, as I said on the image caption, this image was made by Arthlete, a talented artist and blogger. I do not own this image, and had no hand in creating it. If you want to view her blog, click on the picture).

I guess that’s all I have to say today, other than that I’ve met my word quote for NaNoWriMo today, with a couple hundred words in addition. 🙂

7 Things I’m Grateful For

grateful7
It’s that time again! Here’s my 7 things I am grateful for this week. 🙂
1. NaNoWriMo -In case you don’t know, NaNoWriMo stands form National Novel Writing Month. Every November, this awesome event takes place, give writers a chance to bond together in a common goal -writing a novel! I’m super excited, and I’m going to return to my abandoned novel, Cry of the Amazon. I already have 20k written, but to keep within the contest rules, I will write another 50k words, which will bring my novel to 70,000 words. This is going to be a great opportunity for me, and I intend to take full advantage of it.
2. Baklava -I love baklava! It’s my favorite holiday dessert, and I was able to enjoy a piece (or two) of it yesterday. My friend and sister-in-law, Lizzy, had a 6 course Turkish meal for her international foods class. It was a lot of fun, and the food was great. 🙂
3. Advil -So, I have been struggling with a lot of headaches lately, and let me tell you, I am so grateful for modern medicine. Advil helps keep my headaches at bay, and helps preserve my sanity.
4. Cute Glasses -I love glasses, and I think they are a fun fashion accessory. I’m especially grateful for my blue-framed, glasses, which I got from Zenni Optical, for only $12! Without them, I have a hard time recognizing faces, which is a bummer. I’m not skipping glasses at church today!
5. Mary Kay Eye Makeup Remover -I did write a review on this makeup remover earlier in the week, but I wanted to mention it again. My eyes are so sensitive, and just about everything I’ve tried sends me eyes straight to red and puffy land. But, this makeup remover does not! So, right now, I’m very grateful for my non-red eyes.
6. Friends -This week, I have been reminded time and time again about how much my friends care about me, and are willing to lend a hand. From dyeing my hair, to helping with stress meltdowns, to just listening, my friends have been there for me. Thank you so much, everyone!
7. Herbal Tea -Speaking of stress meltdowns, last night I was so stressed that all of the muscles in my body were tensed and throbbing. My friend Jessica and her husband were there at the rescue, with essential oils and a magnesium drink. The magnesium went into a cup of herbal lemon tea, and it helped a lot. Plus, I just love herbal tea in general. It’s very soothing and wonderful, and helps me to feel pampered.

Harry Potter Inspired Fashion

hp

So, I’ve been feeling a little nostalgic lately, about the Harry Potter books. As I mentioned in my last 7 Things I’m Grateful For post, they were a strength and an inspiration during my adolescence. So, today, I decided to honor the books by presenting some fun “fanfare” jewelry.

My favorite selection is definitely these Hogwarts House Stackable Rings on Etsy, retailing at $22. These rings are handmade and sold by the owner, Tuesdays and Fridays. She’s located in the Philippines, so if you buy from her, expect 2-3 weeks for delivery.

Since this is a fashion blog, and not a book blog, I won’t go super in-depth on why I love these books. But, here are a few fun facts: My favorite character is Hermione Granger. While I love the Gryffindor house, I’d probably end up being a Ravenclaw. Book number five, Order of the the Phoenix was my favorite for a while, but number six, the Half-Blood Prince, is now my favorite.

And yeah. That’s my post. I love Harry Potter, and I love fashion, so why not combine them?
