15 Wardrobe Essentials

I‘ve been thinking a lot about how I want to change my wardrobe up. I have lots of beautiful clothes, but most of them don’t fit me anymore (which I am attempting to rectify via weight loss –I’ve lost 5 pounds already!). Another big problem that I have my wardrobe to coordinate well, and to get a more casual, but still trendy vibe. As a fashion blogger, I don’t work at a desk, so I don’t exactly need to show up in suits. So, I have come up with 15 casual wardrobe essentials. Please keep in mind that these are more geared for fall and winter, as I’m moving back to Idaho soon.

  1. Cardigan –A cardigan is a great layering technique, to help me keep warm. But beyond that, cardigans add a lot of wardrobe versatility. You can wear them over t-shirts to look more polished, or over a blouse, to look more casual. Now, there are several different types of cardigans, and the type you choose can change the message. I have a standard, streamlined cardigan shown above. I think it’s the perfect balanced between casual and stylish. If you go for a more slouchy cardigan, it will give you a more casual look. If you go for a dressier cardigan, you will look dressier.
  2. Blouse– Even in a casual setting, I still think that blouses are important. They can be dressed down or up, and look great with jeans. Blouses also do a great job of taking you from day to night. Here, you have several choices. You can choose button up, peasant, a stretchy knit, a tunic, etc. Above, I have shown a tie-up button down blouse, which I think is the best choice when on a limited budget.
  3. Leather Jacket –I love leather jackets. They do an excellent job of looking cool and edgy, while amping up your style. Leather jackets can make sweaters and t-shirts look edgy, and when paired with a pair of heels and a skirt, can look glamorous and sophisticated. Depending on your coloring and preference, you can choose black, brown, or even a colored leather jacket. I have chosen a leather jacket in black. If a leather jacket makes you feel uncomfortable, you can also choose a dressy denim jacket.
  4. Dressy T-Shirt –When I say dressy, I am talking about the cut and the fabric. Believe it or not, they do make t-shirts from silky synthetics, which can rev up your style engine in no time. Also, embellishments, fun collars and neck/hemlines definitely add to a t-shirt’s elegance. Dressy tees can transition from casual to dressy, with the right accessories.
  5. Wrap Dress –I love wrap dresses, especially in stretchy knits such as jersey. These dresses are casual and comfy, but can look great with the right accessories. I hope you can see a pattern forming –I think the best wardrobe essentials can transition from day to night, casual to glamorous. That way, you can get the most out of your wardrobe.
  6. Signature Fragrance –While this isn’t exactly a piece of clothing, I still think it is essential to your style. Having a delicious smelling fragrance that announces your presence and personality can really help to complete a look. Shown is my favorite fragrance, Cashmere Glow by Bath and Body Works.
  7. Statement Earrings –Statement earrings are a great way of completing a look, and are in my opinion, one of the most important aspects of your wardrobe. You can choose them in many different styles, depending on your personality and preference. If you don’t have ear piercings, or you just aren’t an earring kind of gal, go for a statement necklace or cuff instead. The point is to choose a piece of jewelry that looks fabulous, attracts notice, and can be paired with many items in your wardrobe.
  8. Scarf –Scarves are amazing! They add chic, style, and even mystery to your wardrobe. You can wear them in countless ways, which makes them extremely versatile. You can get them in countless colors, patterns, fabrics and finishes. For a wardrobe essential, however, I’d suggest choosing one in a solid, statement color –one that looks great on you and can work well with the rest of your wardrobe.
  9. Khakis –Khakis, or chinos, are incredibly comfy, and are a step up for your everyday jeans. They still manage to look casual, but show off your excellent taste. You can get these in tan, olive, white, or even navy.
  10. Jeans –While I’m sure you already have a pair of jeans in your wardrobe, make sure you have a dressier pair. Now when I say this, I’m not talking about fringe, rhinestones or other embellishments. I’m talking about a pair in a beautiful wash –I prefer a dark rinse –with no rips or holes. This jeans can be taken to the next level with heels and blouse, or they can add more polish to your t-shirt and tennis shoes.
  11. Pullover sweater –I specify pullover sweater, to differentiate it from the cardigan and hoodie sweatshirt. A pullover sweater looks comfy and casual, but can look beautiful and elegant, when stepped up a notch. A pullover sweater can be a bit loose and baggy, but it doesn’t have to. Choosing one that skims the lines of your body will give the sweater instant class. But, if you are into the more casual feel, a looser sweater is for you.
  12. Pencil skirt –I know that when you hear pencil skirt, you probably think office wear. If you get it made out of suit material, yes it will look that way. However, you can get pencil skirts made out of knits, denim, and lace overlay. I love pencil skirts, because I think they are flattering on most women, and that they are a great transitional piece.
  13. Black Heels –Black heels may not seem casual to me, but hear me out. I’m not saying to choose a pair of super high strappy stilettos. In fact, I would suggest against it when picking a wardrobe essential. I think choosing a closed toe, comfy –yes, I said comfy –pair of black heels that can refine your casual look. I’d definitely suggest a gel pad for the ball of your foot, as that is where you place the most pressure.
  14. Ballet Flats –I love ballet flats. They are super cute, without being super fussy. They’re easier to walk in, and you can get them in just about any color and print. If I were to suggest a color to you, I would suggest one of these four –black, brown, red or turquoise. Red and turquoise are attention colors, and really can be paired with most colors, as long as you get the shade and tint right.
  15. Flat-Soled Tennis Shoes –Think Converse or Vans. While you don’t necessarily need to buy these brands, it will give you a picture of the right shoe to wear. It can be tempting to wear athletic sneakers around, but unless you are going for the fitness look, they can come off a bit gym teacher. A good way to remedy this is to wear a pair of flat-soled tennis shoes.
